But the reality is, taking the time to care for your teeth now can help you avoid the need for implants, root canals, or other expensive treatments in the future. With healthy gums and a strong jawbone, your teeth are less likely to be extracted, and in the event of a root canal, the longevity of treatment is very good. However, if you get tooth decay often, you may want to skip the hassle of trying to save a tooth with an expensive root canal. If your dentist predicts that you’ll get another cavity within 10 years, then a dental implant is a reasonable treatment that can last a lifetime because it is made up entirely of titanium and beautiful ceramic parts that bacteria cannot cavitate. Now, what about preventing cavities on your natural teeth in the first place? These 5 tips will help you keep your natural teeth healthy: 1. **Practice good oral hygiene**. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss daily to remove plaque and bacteria that can cause tooth decay and gum disease.   2. **Maintain a healthy lifestyle**. A healthy diet and regular exercise can help keep your teeth and gums healthy. Additionally, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can reduce your risk of oral health problems. 3. **Attend regular dental checkups**. Speak with your physician to avoid medications that affect your saliva, a side effect known as xerostomia or “dry mouth”. Regular dental cleanings and checkups can help detect small cavities that can be filled before the tooth needs to be extracted. Be aware that small cavities do not cause pain, so the only way to find them is to have your dentist look with a good light source, magnification (“loupes”), and checkup x-rays. 4. **Consider preventive treatments**. Sealants and fluoride treatments can help prevent tooth decay and other dental problems, potentially saving you from more costly restorative procedures down the road. 5. **Address dental issues promptly**. If you experience dental pain or notice any changes in your teeth or gums, don't ignore them. Addressing dental issues promptly can help prevent more severe problems that may require expensive treatments. Don’t get me wrong, dental implants are fantastic, but by following these tips, you can maintain good oral health and reduce your risk of needing them in the first place!
